Periodically, it's my birthday! This is a great cake for all those little scientists out there.

35 centimetre x 60cm rectangular cake board

Cake

2 x 450g packets double unfilled sponge slabs

453 gram tub vanilla frosting

Decorations

2 x 500g packets licorice allsorts

yellow and black writing icing

Method

1.Level cake tops. Secure 2 sponge slabs, long sides touching, on cake board. Spread tops with some of the frosting. Top with remaining cakes. Spread top and sides with frosting.

2.Using a sharp knife; cut licorice allsorts in half (You need 8 yellow, 18 orange, 23 pink and 14 green). Using picture as a guide, position coloured licorice pieces on cake to make periodic table.

3.Write element symbols onto periodic table with yellow writing icing and ‘happy birthday’ with black writing icing

You can also use ready-made coloured icing cut into squares to form the table.
