The tangy sweetness of apple sour cream slice makes it a classic tea-time treat (or even dessert).

3.

Place apple and sour cream in a medium bowl; stir to combine. Spread mixture evenly over warm base; smooth surface. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Bake for 15 minutes. Cool to room temperature. Cover with plastic food wrap; chill for 2 hours or until firm. Cut into squares to serve.

You’ll need these…

Apple and sour cream slice ingredients

This recipe uses a cake mix and coconut for a fluffy, yet textured base that contrasts nicely with the apple and sour cream. It’s easy enough to make on your own or with the whole family.

Butter cake mix

Butter cake mix comes in different sizes, so if you get a larger packet, remember to only use what’s required for this recipe. Depending on how much is leftover, you could use the rest to make these mini flower cakes, or save it for next time you want to make this apple slice.

Pie apples

Pie apple cans and tins are available at all major supermarkets and typically contain Granny Smith apples that are sliced and ready for adding to recipes like this one or apple pie (where the name comes from).

Sour cream

While this recipe calls for a 300g carton of sour cream, if you want to buy a larger carton you could use our handy guide to cup vs weight in grams to measure out the required amount (or kitchen scales if you have them).

Desiccated coconut

Concentrated, dried, unsweetened and finely shredded coconut flesh.

Butter

Unsalted or “sweet” butter has no salt added and is the most popular butter for baking and sweet creations.

Nutmeg

Nutmeg is a strong and pungent spice from the dried nut of an evergreen tree native to Indonesia. You can buy jars of ground nutmeg at the supermarket, but the flavour is more intense from a whole nut, so it’s best to grate your own.

Can fresh apples be used instead of tinned apples?

If you want to use fresh apples in this apple and sour cream slice recipe, you could try this stewed apple recipe, although you would need scales to make sure the stewed amount was the same as the can used in this recipe.

How to store apple sour cream slice

Store this slice in the fridge and it will keep for 2 days. We do not recommend freezing this slice.
